Gifted and Talented testing is done in 5th grade. Gifted and Talented (GT) classes are a step above Honors courses and are offered at Olympus Jr. for grades 6-8. There is no GT program for grades beyond that. If your student is doing really well in school and is looking to be challenged more in Science, English, Math, or Social Studies, please have them take the GT test. If they decide GT coursework is too much, they can return to Honors or Core classes, but they will not be able to re-enter. Another student will take their place. Each student who is interested in the GT program must take the GT test provided by the district to see if they qualify. *If your student is attending a Granite School District school, the GT test will be administered at their school in 5th grade. Please look for more details on when and where from your current school.
There is not a GT Math class. However, in the spring of 6th grade, students are tested at school to see if they qualify for the accelerated math program. If their score qualifies, the student has the option of taking 7th and 8th Compacted Math during 7th grade. Both 7th and 8th grade curriculums will be taught in one year and then the student will take Honors Secondary 1 Math in 8th grade. This is a high school level course and students' grades will appear on their high school transcript.
*If your student is NOT attending a Granite School District school, they will need to register with the district for a specific time.
