Through Olympus Jr. High Counseling, students will learn effective communication skills, increase academic expectations, develop respect for their peers, school, and community and create a positive/safe learning environment.
But, what do counselors do?
That is a great question! Counselors are involved in all aspects of a students education. The counseling center is a safe environment and we encourage students to visit whenever they need emotional, social, or academic support. Counselors provide services in the following areas.
- INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PLANNING
8th graders will meet formally with their assigned counselor once per year during CCR meetings to review and discuss their current academic progress, upcoming course selections, four-year plan, academic and personal goals, career options, etc. Parents are invited and encouraged to attend this meeting with their student.
6th and 7th graders will meet briefly with their assigned counselor at the beginning and end of the year to discuss the transition to Jr. High, academic expectations, and an introduction to college and career planning. - RESPONSIVE SERVICES
Students are encouraged to visit the counseling center for any concerns including; friends, suicidal thoughts, grief and loss, personal/social issues, concerns with classes or teachers, family issues, bullying, crisis situations, etc. Friends, teachers, administrators, and parents are encouraged to refer students who many be struggling or who many benefit from counseling services. Counselors are available throughout the school day to help parents and students with any concerns. - GUIDANCE CURRICULUM
Counselors regularly visit the students in the classroom and organize events that allow students to explore and develop personal/social, life/career, multicultural, and academic/learning skills. This includes; Career Exploration lessons and Character Education (bullying, life skills, social skills, etc.).
